Traditionally, each farmer would make their own cheese and would attend a regional weekly market to sell it (i.e. the famous VILLALON cheese market). This was a very time-consuming activity that would prevent them from focusing on their main activity: agriculture.
In 1948, a group of farmers from Melgar (VA) convinced our grandfather, Ramón, to buy their milk, process it and sell the cheese himself. Our grandfather decided to take on the challenge and moved his family from their home village (Villalonso -ZA) for one season. What intended to be a temporary stint became a permanent way of living. In this simple and little beaurocratic way, Quesos Gamazo was born.
“Tierra de Campos” means “land of fields”; the main feature of our landscape is extensive flat areas of crops of cereal. The harsh weather has, also, contributed to shape the character of its people: straightforward, and hard-working.
The animal that has adjusted best in this land and weather is the sheep, which produces the raw material that has become the gastronomic jewel of our region, namely sheep´s milk.
